Japan and Moldova signal closer ties at ambassador’s farewell

Moldova’s diplomatic presence in Japan took center stage this week as officials, diplomats and business representatives gathered in Tokyo to mark the end of Ambassador Dumitru Socolan’s mandate, in an event that highlighted the country’s European ambitions and its growing engagement in Asia.

Held at the European Union Delegation in Tokyo, the reception brought together Japanese officials, foreign diplomats and private sector representatives, underscoring Moldova’s efforts to expand its international partnerships beyond Europe. The event also served as a platform to present the country’s ongoing progress toward European integration.

In her remarks, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Arfiya Eri praised Ambassador Socolan’s role in strengthening bilateral ties over the past four years, noting advances in political dialogue and economic cooperation. She expressed confidence that exchanges between Japan and Moldova would continue to deepen, particularly through increased business and people-to-people connections.

Discussions during the event also focused on Moldova’s European trajectory and the broader geopolitical environment, including cooperation with the European Union and efforts to address external hybrid threats. The dialogue reflected growing international attention on the country’s strategic positioning at a time of heightened regional uncertainty.

Beyond formal diplomacy, the reception highlighted Moldova’s use of cultural and economic outreach as tools of engagement. Guests were introduced to Moldovan wines and traditional cuisine, illustrating how smaller nations are leveraging soft power to raise their profile in competitive diplomatic environments such as Tokyo.
