Japan elevates India to strategic economic priority

Japan has taken a step to strengthen its economic engagement with India by establishing a dedicated Japan-India Economic Affairs Division within its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signaling a growing strategic focus on one of Asia’s fastest-expanding markets.

The new unit, launched on April 1 under the Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, reflects Tokyo’s intention to move beyond traditional diplomacy and reinforce business-driven bilateral ties. As India’s economic growth accelerates, Japan is positioning itself to play a more active role in shaping investment flows and industrial cooperation.

Officials point to increasing opportunities for Japanese companies in sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, and digital industries. The division is expected to facilitate public-private coordination, supporting firms seeking to expand operations in India while addressing regulatory and operational challenges on the ground.

The initiative also carries a broader strategic dimension. Japan and India have been deepening cooperation in economic security, including supply chain resilience and critical technologies. In a context of global uncertainty and shifting trade patterns, both countries are seeking to reduce vulnerabilities and build more diversified economic partnerships.

For Tokyo, the move underscores a longer-term recalibration of its regional strategy. As companies reassess their exposure to China and look toward alternative growth markets, India is emerging not only as an investment destination, but as a key pillar in Japan’s Indo-Pacific economic architecture.
