Japan and UK step up strategic coordination amid global instability

Japan and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation across security, economic and diplomatic domains, as both countries seek to respond to an increasingly volatile global environment.

The pledge came during the 10th Japan–UK Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue in Tokyo, where Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper aligned their positions on key international challenges and issued a joint statement outlining areas for closer coordination.

Both sides stressed that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific regions is increasingly interconnected, underscoring the need for enhanced cooperation. In this context, the two countries agreed to accelerate progress on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), seen as a cornerstone of their bilateral defence partnership.

Economic ties also featured prominently, with ministers highlighting ongoing cooperation under the Japan–UK Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and within the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. They also committed to strengthening supply chain resilience, particularly in critical minerals, amid rising concerns over economic security.

The dialogue reflects a broader effort by Tokyo and London to position their partnership as a pillar of stability in an uncertain international order, with both governments signalling their intention to maintain close coordination on geopolitical and economic challenges.
