Peru organizes national election voting centers across Japan

The Consulate General of Peru in Tokyo has finalized the establishment of four strategic voting centers to facilitate the 2026 Peruvian General Elections on Sunday, April 12. This logistical operation ensures that the Peruvian diaspora, a significant community within Japan’s international landscape, can exercise its democratic rights. The polling stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., serving eligible citizens across various prefectures, from Hokkaido to Shizuoka.

To manage the turnout efficiently, the consulate has decentralized the process across four key hubs. The Belle Salle Shiodome in Tokyo will accommodate the largest demographic, covering the capital and northern regions. Additional centers have been designated at Viento Takasaki in Gunma, the Saitama Grand Hotel Honjo, and the Kakegawa Grand Hotel in Shizuoka. This distribution reflects the geographical spread of the Peruvian community, which is deeply integrated into Japan’s regional industrial sectors.

The electoral process is governed by strict eligibility criteria, as the electoral roll was officially closed on October 14, 2025. Only Peruvian citizens who updated their DNI address to a Japanese location before that deadline are permitted to cast their votes in the archipelago. For the diplomatic mission, this event represents a major administrative challenge that underscores the importance of the overseas vote in Peru’s national political discourse.

Ultimately, the mobilization for the 2026 elections highlights the resilience and civic commitment of the Peruvian community in Japan. As one of the most established Latin American groups in the country, their participation is a testament to the enduring ties between Lima and Tokyo. For the diplomatic community, the successful execution of these elections on Japanese soil serves as a model of international cooperation and efficient consular management.
